West New York is a city located in Hudson County, New Jersey and has a population of roughly 52,000. Prostitution rings, indoor prostitution, and street prostitution have all presented problems for the city for decades, and resulted in complaints from the community.  In 2010, the Street Crimes Unit of the West New York Police Department busted eight separate prostitution operations, many of which were investigated in response to tips from residents.  In 2006, a woman was abducted from a nightclub by a prostituted woman and an accomplice, and was raped and murdered.  In 2013, a person who prostituted in West New York was arrested for knowingly spreading the HIV virus to as many as 300 people.  The West New York Police Department reportedly has received approximately 10 to 20 complaints a week on their hotline, and the Chief of Police said, “We follow through on every complaint.  The whole department is very dedicated towards the community.”  He added that some of the women who have been arrested cited the current economic situation as their reason for getting involved in prostitution. He hopes the recent arrests will serve as a warning call to others contemplating or currently involved in such activity.  In an effort to reduce the demand for prostitution, police have conducted reverse stings.
