Schaumburg is a suburb of Chicago and has a population of approximately 77,000. It is located in Cook County. Prostitution and sex trafficking has been documented problems in the city, and throughout the county, and Schaumburg residents have complained to police about prostitution and its related problems in multiple neighborhoods. One local sex trafficking case involved a pregnant 16-year-old girl who was kicked out of her house and then lived in a Schaumburg mall.  She was picked up by a female recruiter who took her home and fed her until the girl’s baby was born. Then the young mother was “turned out” to engage in prostitution (i.e., child sex trafficking).  In another case, through a prostitution sting it was discovered that several women were coming from out of state to be sold for sex at a Schaumburg hotel.  A week later, two of those women robbed several people, and in that event two people were shot, one fatally.

In response to such concerns surrounding prostitution and sex trafficking, police have targeted commercial sex, including attempts to combat-consumer-level demand.  The Schaumburg Police Department has conducted reverse stings since 1993, and at least one street-level reverse sting that resulted in five arrests.

A Schaumburg law enforcement respondent to the 2022 National Assessment Survey reported that demand reduction tactics used within the city include sex buyers arrested by means other than reverse stings (since 2005), public education specifically targeting the demand for commercial sex (since 2014), cameras used to deter or collect evidence against sex buyers (since 2021), and vehicle seizures (since 2021).
