The town of Riverhead is the county seat of Suffolk County, New York, on the north shore of Long Island near Southampton and Riverside. It has a population of approximately 34,000 residents. Prostitution has been identified as a substantial problem in the city, generating numerous complaints to police and a wide range of associated crimes. For example, the targeted homicide of women engaged in prostitution has also been documented.

Consumer level demand provides the revenue stream for all prostitution and sex trafficking, and has therefore been targeted by local law enforcement agencies as a strategy for prevention and response. Riverhead Town Police have conducted reverse stings since at least 2007 in order to reduce consumer-level demand. The names and ages of the men arrested in reverse stings have been released to media outlets.
